Bakersfield's Two Top-Rated Roofers Have 467 Reviews. AI Named Neither.

When a customer asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for a local recommendation they get one to six names, not ten blue links. We ran the test across three Bakersfield industries and found that ranking at the top of Google does not mean AI knows you exist.

A person holding a phone and typing a search

A customer looking for a roofer used to open Google, get a map and ten blue links, and pick from a dozen or so options. That customer increasingly opens ChatGPT or Perplexity instead, types a sentence, and gets a handful of names with reasons attached.

There is no page two. There is no scrolling to position eleven. You are one of the names or you are not in the conversation.

We wanted to know what that looks like in Bakersfield specifically, so on 19 September 2026 we ran the same test across three local industries and wrote down exactly what came back.

Roofing: it named one company

We asked for the best roofing company in Bakersfield. The answer came back with a single name, Superior Roofing, described as a strong local option for repairs and installations.

One company, in a city with dozens of roofers.

Here is the part that should stop you. On Google, the same search returns a local pack led by Roof On Brand at 5.0 stars from 245 reviews and Ed and J United Roofing at 4.9 from 222 reviews. Between them, 467 reviews and two nearly perfect ratings. They are, by the clearest available measure, the two most trusted roofers in this city.

Neither of them was named.

That is the finding worth sitting with. Both of those businesses have done the hard thing. They have done years of good work and earned hundreds of genuine reviews, and they are winning on Google because of it. And in an answer that a customer will treat as a recommendation, they did not come up at all.

Ranking at the top of Google does not mean AI knows you exist. Those are two different systems reading two different sets of data.

Personal injury: it named two firms

We asked for the best personal injury lawyer in Bakersfield. The answer named two: Chain, Cohn, Clark and Rodriguez & Associates.

Kern County has far more than two personal injury firms, and several of them spend heavily on advertising. The answer went to two.

What makes this one instructive is where the answer got its material. It cited the firm’s own website, and it quoted a specific, checkable claim from it, that the firm has recovered nearly a billion dollars, alongside its reported case results.

That is a concrete, quotable fact published in plain language on a page. A summariser can lift it and stand behind it. “Trusted local attorneys serving Kern County since 1985” cannot be lifted, because it does not say anything a machine can verify or repeat.

Restaurants: it named ten, with ratings

The same test for restaurants returned a completely different shape of answer. Ten places, each with a star rating, several with review counts and addresses attached. Locale Farm to Table at 4.5 from 520 reviews. New Vintage Grill at 4.6 from 443. Luigi’s at 4.7 from 1,394. Wool Growers, the Basque institution that has been open since 1954, at 4.6 from roughly 1,800.

Rich, specific, and generous with names.

Why the difference? Because restaurants sit inside a mature structured dataset. Location, hours, cuisine, price band, rating and review count all exist in a standard machine-readable form that every system can read and compare. Roofers mostly do not have that. So for restaurants the answer is detailed and fair, and for roofing it falls back to whichever single company happened to be described most clearly somewhere it could read.

What this actually means

Put the three together and the pattern is clear.

Whether AI can see your business is a function of what data exists about you in a form it can read. Not how good you are. Not how long you have been in business. Not even, as the roofers demonstrate, how well you rank on Google.

Three things are doing the work.

Structured facts in a standard form. Your category, service area, hours, and above all your review data, published where machines expect to find them. The restaurant result is what good structured data looks like from the customer’s side.

Concrete, quotable claims on your own site. The law firm got named partly because it published a specific number a summariser could repeat. Publish real figures. Name your service area in plain words. Say what you actually do in language a machine can lift without interpreting.

Presence on the pages that already list your category. Directories and roundups covering your industry in Bakersfield are raw material for these answers. If the “best [your category] in Bakersfield” pages do not list you, you are absent from the source material.

What we would do about it, in order

Run the test on yourself. Open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask for the best business in your category in Bakersfield. Then ask directly about your business by name. Read what comes back. It takes four minutes and most owners have never done it.

Find the pages the answer came from. Search “best [your category] Bakersfield” and note which directories and roundups rank. Check whether you are on each one.

Get on the ones you are missing. Many are free. Some are a form. This is unglamorous and it is the most direct lever available.

Make your own site quotable. Replace adjectives with facts. Numbers, years, service areas, specific outcomes.

Then check your review data is complete and consistent everywhere it appears, because it is the single strongest signal in every one of these answers.

The part that should concern you

None of this asks your permission.

An answer is being generated about your category in your city right now, several times a day, and it either includes you or it does not. There is no notification when you are left out. No impression count, no position to track, no alert. The only way to find out is to go and ask.

Two of the best roofers in Bakersfield, with 467 reviews between them, almost certainly have no idea.
